Fashion icon—a term which is thrown around loosely yet should never be taken lightly, and when you hear it, your mind should, perhaps, shift to the likes of Michelle Obama, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Audrey Hepburn or maybe Pharell Williams—the 2015 Style Icon Award recipient—the award given yannually by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) since 2002. So, can we safely place Amal Clooney in the same category? Does she have an identifiable personal style that will transcend time?
Here’s what’s intriguing about her and what may heighten the propensity to deem Amal the next fashion icon albeit prematurely. We like that her style is diverse—not only do we see her in smart suits and business separates, she’s also no stranger to a trendy pair of wedge sneakers and boyfriend jeans. She’s bold—playing with patters, textures and cuts which she always seems to pull off effortlessly.
She doesn’t live in the shadow of her husband’s celebrity status. As a well established as a human rights lawyer, plus having a great sense of style before she wed George Clooney, there could be something a bit iconic about a woman who is a trailblazer in her own right and whose spouse compliments her success rather than create it. Lastly, we could be a little intrigued by her lack of a social media presence. She’s not snapping outfit pics on Instagram, we’re waiting for the paparazzi to catch her #OOTD.
But have we had a that’s so Amal Clooney moment yet? While it is certainly delightful that we can always expect something fresh and age appropriate from her, there has yet to be that thing we know is hers. Michelle has her sheath dresses, cardigans and kitten heels; Jackie O. had her sunglasses; Audrey’scapri pants and flats are timeless. So, what about Amal—will we be debating her as a fashion icon decades from now? Presented by the CFDA or voted by self-proclaimed fashion critics around the world, fashion icon is a tall order to fill for anyone, and we’ve got our eye on you, Amal.
